Friend of the Carl Kruse Arts Blog, Nigel Luhman, invites us to a special evening featuring classical guitarist Guy Woodcock, in a living room concert directly across from the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. (The exact address will be provided upon confirmed registration.)

The concert, titlted “Goya’s Spain” — takes place Friday, May 29th, at 8:00 PM.

Francisco Goya (1746–1828) is widely regarded as one of the first modern artists to engage in social critique. One of his most famous works is the *Caprichos*—a series of images that depict, critique, satirize, and diagnose the social conditions of his time. From this series, the Jewish-Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895–1968) selected 24 images and brought them to musical life through his compositions.

In his program “Goya’s Spain,” the outstanding classical guitarist Guy Woodcock performs several of these musical pieces while Goya’s images are projected onto a screen. The concert opens with the first image of the series—a self-portrait of the artist—for which Guy, in collaboration with filmmaker Julian Güttge, has produced a short film. This animation summarizes Goya’s life and will be screened accompanied by Guy’s live musical performance. The program is rounded out by pieces from renowned Spanish composers such as Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Rodrigo, and Francisco Tárrega—masters who captured the essence of Spanish landscapes, dances, and emotions in sound. Together with Tedesco’s evocative cycle, these works create a vivid portrait of Spain—seen through the eyes of Goya and heard through the voice of the guitar.

Israeli guitarist Guy Woodcock has been living in Berlin since 2013. He currently performs with chamber music ensembles and is active as a soloist; he also forms duos with guitarist Josep López and cellist Clara Franz. Following his Bachelor’s studies at the Hanns Eisler School of Music (HfM), he completed an exchange semester at ESMUC in Barcelona. In July 2021, Guy completed his Master’s degree at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) under Prof. Thomas Müller-Pering, graduating with top honors. Among other distinctions, Guy won First Prize at the international “Ferdinand Rebay” Competition and Second Place at Israel’s National Guitar Competition; he was also a scholarship recipient of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for four years. Since January 2021, he has also served as a teacher at the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf State Music School.

Goya’s Spain: Friday, May 29, at 8:00 PM. Admission is free; generous donations for the musician are requested.
