The Carl Arts Blog invites all to a conversation with artist Yury Kharchenko to take place this Monday, October 6 at 7pm at the TAZ Canteen located on Friedrichstr. 21 in Berlin. Admission is free and the event-space is barrier free.

Carl Kruse Arts has often focused on Yury’s work these past years including exhibitions, conferences, and chats (see the Hallisches-Frankisches Museum, What Does Art Cost?, the Wallraf Museum, Hamburg and Berlin Exhibits, and Kunstverein Krefeld.)

Yury Kharchenko has lived and worked in Berlin for 16 years – as a painter who has had numerous worldwide exhibitions. He spent his childhood in Moscow. Later, after his family emigrated to Germany, he grew up in the Rhineland. His works form part of collections at the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, Kunstmuseum Walter, Sammlung Wemhöner (Herford/Berlin), Kunsthaus NRW Aachen, NS Documentation Center Cologne, and the Felix Nussbaum House in Osnabrück.

One of the work cycles in his oeuvre intensively explores his Jewish history, the demonization of Jewishness and hostility, particularly after the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent anti-Jewish movement in most Western countries. In the this upcoming TAZ Talk he discusses what moves him, his experiences, and his view of the world, especially after October 7, and how his fears affect his work – and he discusses something that is often flatly denied: that there is a cancel culture against Jewish artists. This TAZ talk also looks ahead: From November 13th to 28th, Yury Kharchenko, together with Aljoscha Zamyatin, is curating an exhibition entitled “Bad Good Jews” in the former Nazi bunker in Berlin (Bunker West, Hohenzollerndamm 120).

Questions and comments from the audience via livestream and in the TAZ canteen are highly welcome. Jan Feddersen, TAZ editor for special assignments and curator of the TAZ talks and TAZ lab, will moderate this talk.
